The hairline is one of the defining characteristics of the face, and one of the first things that people notice. In some patients, the hairline may be receding, or thinning due to tight hairstyles or natural regression (androgenetic alopecia in men). Hairline lowering surgery, also referred to as forehead reduction surgery, can help restore the natural proportions and symmetry of the face by reducing the effective size of the forehead (area between the eyebrow and the hairline).
What is Hairline Lowering Surgery?
Hairline lowering surgery involves manipulation of the hairline to effectively reduce the size of the forehead. This can be done in one of two ways. The first method involves hair transplantation to the front of the hair, essentially filling in hair from the left to right side of the upper forehead and creating a “new” hairline, one that is lower on the forehead than the original.
Forehead reduction surgery is another technique that can be used to lower the hairline. For some individuals that have larger than normal distance between the eyebrows and the hairline, a small strip of skin can be removed from the top of the forehead. A “release” technique is employed to lift the scalp and bring it forward to fill in the area removed from the top of the forehead. Done correctly, this procedure can reduce the hairline by more than an inch.
