FEMALE HAIR RESTORATION
IN BEVERLY HILLS, CA

Women typically experience hair loss in a different pattern than men. In women, hair loss typically occurs in the middle of the head running from front to back and then widening. For many women, this hair loss can lead to embarrassment or reduced confidence. Hair restoration can help to restore confidence and boost self esteem.

Understanding Hair Loss In Women

Female Pattern Baldness (Androgenic Alopecia)

Sometimes, hair loss is simply a combination of genetics and aging. A thorough knowledge of parental history of hair loss can give insight into expectations for one’s potential for hair loss. This hair loss typically occurs as a result of natural changes in hormones. DHT (dihydrotestosterone), for example, is a breakdown product of testosterone and can directly attack hair follicles resulting in hair loss.

Hormonal Fluctuations

Estrogen and progesterone are two of the main hormones that are naturally elevated in women. When the levels of these hormones begin to fall (such as in menopause), the effects of other hormones called androgens (male hormones) are increased. When this happens, hair might become finer (thinner) because hair follicles shrink. Hair grows more slowly and falls out more easily in these cases.

Nutritional Deficiencies

Hair loss can sometimes be due to low levels of certain essential vitamins and minerals. Riboflavin, biotin, folate, and vitamin B12 deficiencies have been associated with hair loss.

What is Female Hair Restoration?

Hair loss can affect both men and women alike. In fact, almost half of patients that report hair loss are women. In women, rather than complete balding, there is often thinning of the hair. For some, this thinning can really affect confidence and make people feel like they lost a piece of their identity.

At Crown Hair Institute, we work diligently to diagnose the cause of your hair loss and create the best plan of action to both restore and maintain your new hair. Female hair transplantation can be performed using either the FUE or LSE method. Both procedures involve removing hair from a donor site (area of healthy hair, usually the back of the scalp) and transplanting it to the recipient site (area of hair loss). The results of female hair restoration will not only be natural but will also create a renewed sense of confidence.

How Is Female Hair Restoration Performed

Female hair restoration is performed in the exact same manner as male hair restoration. Hair is taken from the back of the head and placed into areas of the head where the hair may be thinning. At Crown, we will work with you to create the most natural look possible to help you restore self confidence and boost self esteem.

Is Female Hair Restoration Right For You?

Female hair transplantation can be performed for a variety of reasons. For some patients, their hair may be thinning due to the natural changes that occur with aging. For others, they may have suffered hair loss due to surgery or previous injury. Female hair transplantation is also popular amongst our MTF transgender patients who desire a more feminine appearance.

Treating Female Hair Loss With Medication

When treating hair loss, it is important that we use as many tools as possible to support and augment hair transplantation. There are some medications that can aid in this process. Minoxidil (trade name Rogaine) can be used topically or taken orally as a pill, and can help stimulate hair growth. Spironolactone is a medicine that works as an anti-androgen by both slowing down the production of androgens and by blocking the action of androgens, preventing dihydrotestosterone (DHT) from binding to its androgenetic receptor. Estrogen and progesterone pills and creams may be an effective treatment for women with androgenetic alopecia who are going through menopause or whose estrogen and/or progesterone are lacking for other reasons.

Who Is A Good Candidate for Female Hair Restoration?

Women with well-defined baldness, thinning hair and those with limited hair loss due to scalp injuries or repeated cosmetic procedures are ideal candidates for hair restoration surgery. Every patient is unique! Because the underlying cause of hair loss can be different for each patient, deciding on the best option for hair restoration can only happen after a thorough history and physical exam. Schedule a consultation today to determine what hair restoration procedure is right for you.

FAQs For Female Hair Restoration In Beverly Hills

What is recovery like?

You may feel a little sleepy or groggy after your procedure so make sure someone is available to pick you up from the clinic to take you back home or to your hotel. Clear instructions will be relayed to both you and your care-giver about appropriate medications to take after surgery. Do not disturb the newly transplanted area for at least 24 hrs (no washing, no touching). After 24 hrs you can start to moisten the area with the provided moisturizer. Do not sleep on the transplanted area. After surgery, it is normal for the transplanted area to be slightly swollen and red. In general, expect redness and scabbing to occur within the first days, this is natural. The transplanted hair may grow, then die off, and then be replaced with new hair within a few months.

Will I have visible scarring?

With the FUT procedure, a strip of hair and skin is removed from the donor site. This will leave a very fine scar, however, our trained surgeons use very specific techniques to ensure that the scar is as minimal as possible. Also, in individuals with longer hair, the hair will hang down over the scar rendering it virtually invisible.

With the FUE procedure, there is no strip removed and instead, each follicle is removed with a tiny round surgical punch. This means that there is no linear scar and patients are usually free to cut their hair as short as they wish. But this does not mean that there is no scar at all. With the FUE procedure, the size of the scar will

depend on the size of the punch used to extract the follicle. But these scars are minimal and often invisible to the naked eye from a few feet away.

How long do the results last?

With both FUE and FUT methods, the newly transplanted hair is taken from an area (donor site) that is plentiful and healthy. In this regard, hair restoration in the form of hair transplantation is a permanent process that lasts for years.
