“PRP works because we are not introducing a foreign substance — we are concentrating and redirecting the growth factors your own body already produces. When you deliver those signals in a high concentration directly where follicles are struggling, the results can be remarkable, particularly for early-stage loss.”
Dr. Robert Drummond, MD PhD
What Are Natural Hair Injections?
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is a regenerative treatment that uses the concentrated growth factors found in your own blood to stimulate dormant hair follicles, prolong the active growth phase of the hair cycle, and improve the scalp environment for healthy hair production. A small blood draw is centrifuged to separate a platelet-rich fraction, which is then injected directly into areas of thinning or loss.
Platelets are tiny blood cells packed with growth factors — including PDGF, TGF-beta, IGF-1, VEGF, and EGF — that trigger cellular repair and regeneration. When concentrated to 4 to 8 times normal blood levels and delivered to the scalp, these growth factors stimulate follicle stem cells, increase blood supply to the dermal papilla, and extend the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle.
At Crown Hair Institute, Dr. Drummond uses an advanced double-spin centrifugation protocol that achieves consistently high platelet concentrations, maximizing the bioactive payload of each injection. PRP is administered as a standalone treatment for early hair loss, as a complement to medical therapy, or as a post-surgical adjuvant following hair transplant to accelerate graft survival.

What to Expect
Treatment Session
A small blood draw is taken. The blood is centrifuged to concentrate the platelet-rich plasma fraction. The scalp is numbed with topical anesthetic and the PRP is injected via a series of small injections across the treatment zone. The session takes 30 to 45 minutes.
Immediate Recovery
Mild scalp tenderness and a tight sensation are normal for 24 to 48 hours. Small injection marks resolve within 1 to 2 days. Avoid washing hair for 24 hours. Resume normal daily activities immediately.
Cellular Response
Growth factors are absorbed by follicle cells and begin activating regenerative signaling. The response is not yet visible externally, but cellular changes are underway.
Second Session
The second PRP session is administered 4 to 6 weeks after the first. Each session builds on the last, progressively improving follicle stimulation and scalp vascularization.
Third Session & Early Results
Third session completed. Many patients begin noticing reduced shedding and new fine hair growth in areas of thinning. Scalp texture and hair caliber may appear improved.
Response Assessment
A full before-and-after density assessment is performed. Maintenance session frequency is determined. Most patients schedule maintenance PRP every 4 to 6 months to sustain the benefit.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does PRP differ from exosome therapy?
PRP uses growth factors concentrated from your own blood — personalized, natural, and zero rejection risk, but with variable output depending on your individual platelet count and health status. Exosome therapy delivers a standardized, pharmaceutical-grade payload of over 1,000 bioactive molecules from screened donor stem cells. Many patients benefit from combining both. PRP tends to be a better value for consistent maintenance while exosomes are preferred for initial intensive treatment.
Does PRP actually regrow hair?
Clinical studies show that PRP can reduce shedding, improve hair shaft diameter, and increase hair count in patients with androgenetic alopecia. Results are strongest in patients with early-to-moderate loss who still have viable miniaturized follicles. Areas of complete follicle loss do not respond — transplantation is needed in those zones.
Is PRP safe?
Yes. Because PRP is derived entirely from your own blood, there is no risk of allergic reaction, immune rejection, or disease transmission. The main risks are those of any injection: temporary bruising, scalp tenderness, or (rarely) infection at injection sites. These are minimized with sterile technique.
How long do results last?
Most patients find that results peak at 6 to 12 months after completing an initial series and gradually diminish if no maintenance sessions are scheduled. Most patients maintain their response with sessions every 4 to 6 months. PRP is not a cure — it manages progression and improves follicle health while the underlying cause (usually DHT) is addressed with medical therapy.
Can PRP be used after a hair transplant?
Yes, and it is commonly recommended. PRP administered at the time of transplant or at the 3-month post-operative mark can accelerate graft survival and early growth. It also improves the health of surrounding native hair, which is undergoing potential shock loss during the recovery period.
Is PRP painful?
The blood draw is the same as a standard lab draw. The scalp injections can be briefly uncomfortable. Dr. Drummond applies topical anesthetic to the scalp before injecting, which substantially reduces discomfort. Most patients describe the procedure as tolerable and the discomfort as brief.
