Which Treatment Is Right for You?
Surgical and non-surgical options each serve different patients, stages, and goals. This guide helps you understand where each fits — and how they work together.
Start your journey today.
Finding the right path during your hair restoration journey can at first seem like a daunting task, but the best plan should be one that is very specific to your unique situation. At Crown, we believe that a thorough history and examination is necessary in order to help you reach your hair loss goals. Some patients wish to maximize results by utilizing every option available — through the use of surgical, medical, and injection therapy. Other patients may desire a minimalist and non-surgical approach. Whatever your goals are, at Crown, we will work with you to create the hair restoration plan that is right for you.
Find your situation
A general guide — individual circumstances require personalized evaluation. A free discovery call will give you a specific, tailored recommendation.
| Your Situation | Likely Best Approach | Surgical? |
|---|---|---|
| Early thinning — hairline still intact | Medications + PRP or Exosomes | |
| Moderate loss — visible scalp, receding hairline | Hair Transplant (FUE) + Medications | |
| Advanced loss — Norwood V–VI | FUE or FUT transplant + staged sessions | |
| Women with diffuse thinning | PRP + Exosomes + Minoxidil; transplant if stable | |
| Traction alopecia hairline damage | Hair Transplant (FUE, curly-hair specialist) | |
| Eyebrow or beard restoration | Hair Transplant (FUE micro-graft technique) |
Surgical Restoration
Surgical hair transplantation permanently relocates living hair follicles from your donor zone — typically the back and sides of the scalp — to thinning or bald areas. Because transplanted follicles are genetically resistant to DHT, they continue growing naturally for a lifetime.
Best for
- Norwood III–VI male pattern hair loss
- Ludwig II–III female pattern hair loss
- Hairline lowering or temple restoration
- Beard, eyebrow, and mustache restoration
- Traction alopecia restoration
Advantages
- Permanent results — transplanted hair grows for life
- Natural-looking density that can be styled, cut, and colored
- Single procedure produces visible, lasting change
- Correct technique leaves no visible scarring (FUE)
- Effective for moderate to advanced hair loss stages
- Works for hairlines, crowns, eyebrows, and beards
Considerations
- —Higher upfront investment ($6.25/graft)
- —Requires adequate donor hair supply
- —Results take 12–18 months to fully mature
- —Brief recovery period with visible redness for 5–7 days
- —Not suitable for active scarring alopecia or autoimmune conditions
Non-Surgical Treatments
Non-surgical options work by stimulating existing follicles, halting loss, or supporting scalp health. Most effective in earlier stages and frequently combined with surgical treatment.
PRP Therapy
Platelet-Rich Plasma
Your own blood is drawn, centrifuged to concentrate growth factors, and injected into the scalp. Growth factors stimulate dormant follicles, increase blood supply, and thicken existing hair.
Best for: Early-stage hair loss, post-transplant acceleration, and patients who want to preserve existing density.
Limitations: Cannot restore hair in completely bald areas. Results are maintenance-dependent.
Typical Cost
$1,000 / session · $2,700 for 3
Treatment Schedule
3 initial sessions, then quarterly maintenance
Exosome Therapy
Regenerative Cell Signaling
Exosomes are nanoscale vesicles derived from stem cells, loaded with growth factors that signal follicular regeneration. A single session delivers far more growth factors than PRP alone.
Best for: Patients wanting the strongest possible non-surgical stimulation, or as a post-transplant accelerator.
Limitations: Ongoing research means long-term outcome data is still accumulating.
Typical Cost
$1,000 / session · $2,700 for 3
Treatment Schedule
3 sessions; combined with PRP for best results
Finasteride & Minoxidil
FDA-Approved Medications
Finasteride blocks DHT production, halting the root driver of pattern hair loss. Minoxidil extends the growth phase and increases follicular blood flow. Both are FDA-approved and evidence-backed.
Best for: Norwood I–III patients with actively miniaturizing hair. Ideal as preventive measure alongside surgery.
Limitations: Must be taken continuously. Finasteride carries potential hormonal side effects in a small percentage of users.
Typical Cost
$30–$80 / month
Treatment Schedule
Daily; ongoing indefinitely
Hair Regrowth Serum
Renew Serum — Red Clover, Peptides, Panthenol
A daily-use scalp serum formulated with Red Clover Extract, Peptide Complex, and Panthenol to encourage new growth, support follicle health, and reduce breakage. Safe for textured, curly, and loc'd hair.
Best for: All patients as a daily foundation. Works alongside medication, PRP, and post-transplant care.
Limitations: Best results when combined with other treatments. Standalone results are gradual.
Typical Cost
$85 / month
Treatment Schedule
Daily application; ongoing
Hair Loss Shampoo & Conditioner
Regrow Shampoo + Conditioner — Shea Butter, Chamomile, Panthenol
A complete cleansing and conditioning system with Shea Butter, Chamomile, and Panthenol. Designed to nourish the scalp, reduce inflammation, and create a healthy environment for hair growth without stripping moisture.
Best for: All hair types. Ideal companion to the Renew Serum and post-transplant care protocols.
Limitations: Best results when used as part of the full Hair Regrowth Kit.
Typical Cost
$170 / month or $85 / bottle
Treatment Schedule
Daily use; ongoing
Most patients benefit from a combined plan
The most effective hair restoration plans layer surgical and non-surgical. A transplant restores density. Medications slow ongoing loss. PRP and exosomes accelerate healing and stimulate growth.
Every consultation at Crown Hair Institute results in a comprehensive plan that addresses your current state, anticipated future loss, and budget.

Your treatment options.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
FUE can be performed on any patient, but is ideal for:
- Individuals who wear their hair short in the back
- Those who have less extensive hair restoration needs
- Those with a history of keloid formation
- Those who want the most minimal scarring
Follicular Unit Transplantation / Linear Strip Excision (FUT/LSE)
The LSE method is sometimes preferred by patients who:
- Have more extensive hair restoration needs
- Do not desire to shave their head
- Want a shorter healing period
Hairline Lowering / Forehead Reduction Surgery
Hairline lowering is often sought out by patients who:
- Have a receding hairline from previous hairstyles (traction alopecia)
- Were born with a disproportionately larger forehead
- Desire a more balanced facial profile
- Want a more youthful appearance
Medications
The medications that we prescribe are oral or topical and aim to prevent hair loss and stimulate healthy hair growth. They're the perfect way to start your hair restoration journey and great to maintain throughout your surgical journey in order to achieve the best possible results. Medications can be ideal for patients who:
- Have a specific underlying medical cause for the hair loss (alopecia areata, thyroid dysfunction, etc.)
- Desire a non-surgical approach to hair restoration
- Want to combine medicine with surgery to maximize hair restoration
Exosome Therapy
Exosome therapy is often chosen by patients who:
- Desire a non-surgical approach to hair restoration
- Wish to combine growth factor injections with surgical hair restoration to maximize outcomes
- Have underlying health problems (anemia, blood disorder) that make PRP injection less ideal
Natural Injections (PRP)
Natural Injections (platelet-rich plasma) is often chosen by patients who:
- Desire a non-surgical approach to hair restoration
- Wish to combine natural injection with surgical hair restoration to maximize outcomes
- Have religious or spiritual beliefs that limit injection of foreign (non-self) substances
